“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.” (Romans 6:1-7 NASB1995)
If you are going to read Romans, chapters 3-5, please read them in the context of the whole of Romans. For, at the time this was written, the Jewish believers in Christ Jesus were transitioning from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant, and the Gentile believers in Christ were entering into a whole new way of life they had never experienced before. And there were Judaizers who were trying to convince the believers in Jesus that they had to hold to some of the liturgical, ceremonial, circumcision, dietary, and Sabbath laws.
And in our world today we have charlatans (fakers) and “wolves in sheep’s clothing” who are using some of these Scriptures out of context to convince those who profess faith in Jesus Christ that they don’t have to obey God’s commands under the New Covenant, since we are not under “The Law” but we are under “Grace.” But please know that God’s grace, which is bringing us salvation, is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives (see Titus 2:11-14).
And then read Romans 3-5, and Romans 7, and Romans 9-11 in the context of Romans 1-2 and 6 and 8 and 12, to get the whole big picture. For Paul did not teach that freedom from the Old Covenant was freedom from having to obey God and his commands under the New Covenant. In fact, he stressed often the importance of us dying to sin and obeying God, and he taught that if sin is our practice, and not obedience to God’s commands, that we do not have salvation from sin and eternal life with God guaranteed us at all.
So, being under Grace, and not under the Old Covenant Law, is not freedom to live in sin and not in walks of obedience to our Lord. For if our faith in Jesus Christ is biblical God-gifted and God-persuaded faith, which is not of our own doing, then we have died to sin and we have been raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as servants of God and of his righteousness in surrender to the will of God. For Jesus put our sins to death with him so we will die to sin and obey God.
And Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

When I lift up my voice, and
Sing praise unto God,
I will fellowship with my
Lord and Savior, King.
In Him there is no darkness.
He is in the light of truth.
If we walk in His light,
From sin He purifies.
If we repent of our sins,
He’ll forgive us now,
When we humble ourselves, and
Before Jesus bow.
The man who says, “I know Him,”
But does not obey His truth,
There is no truth in him.
In darkness still he’s found.
Do not love the world of sin,
For it is hell bound.
If you follow the world, you’ll
Not in Christ be found.
The world and its desires
Will not last; they’ll expire.
The one who does God’s will,
Receives eternal life.
See that what you have heard from
Christ remains in you.
Then, you’ll remain in Christ, and
In His Father, too.
This is what He promised us –
His eternal life with God.
So, continue in Him, and
You’ll receive a crown.
