Celebrating Jesus Christ

“And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” (Luke 2:7-11 NASB1995)

Jesus Christ, the second person of our triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – always existed with God, he is God, and he is our creator God. So he didn’t just exist beginning with his birth as a human baby to a human mother named Mary. He always was and he always will be God. So, why did he choose to leave his throne in heaven and to allow himself to be born as a human baby? It was God the Father’s plan that Jesus would be born as a human, but he was also God, and in order that he might be our sacrificial lamb on a cross to take away our sins and to give us new lives in him.

[Isaiah 53:1-12; Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 17:25; John 1:1-36; John 6:35-58; John 8:24,58; John 10:27-33; John 20:28-29; Romans 5:8; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 9:5; 1 Corinthians 11:23-32; 1 Corinthians 15:1-8; Ephesians 2:8-10; Philippians 2:5-11; Colossians 2:9; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 1:8-9; Hebrews 2:14-15; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Peter 1:1]

Even before Jesus was born into this world as a human baby it was God’s will and purpose that Jesus would be the Savior of the world. I believe that it was God’s will and purpose for Jesus even before God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – laid the foundations of the earth. And I know that about half of the book of Isaiah prophesied about Jesus Christ and the Messianic age, although I am pretty sure his name was not mentioned, but his role, and who he would become, was definitely taught in the book of Isaiah. And when Jesus was born it was announced that he was the Savior, Christ the Lord.

So, what should it have meant to the Jews of that time that Jesus, who was born as a human baby, was their Savior, Christ the Lord? Well, another word for “Christ” is “Messiah,” literally meaning “the anointed one of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” who the Jews had been long awaiting, as best as I understand it. And by “Savior” is meant “redeemer.” And what does it mean to be redeemed by our Redeemer? It is about deliverance from our old lives of living in sin so that we can now live holy lives, pleasing to God. We are rescued from what enslaved us so we can honor God with our lives.

And what does it mean that Jesus Christ is our Lord? It means that he is in supreme authority over our lives, that he is the one in control, and not us, and that he is master of our lives and not our sinful flesh. He is now owner of our lives, and our lives are now surrendered to him to do his will. Our lives are no longer our own to be lived however we choose, for we were bought back for God out of our lives of living in sin via Jesus’ blood shed on that cross, so that we might be delivered from our bondage to sin so we can now serve God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit – with our lives.

So, any celebration of Jesus Christ should not be limited to portraying him only as a baby in a manger, but it should be portraying him as the Christ, the Messiah, our Lord, and we should be celebrating what he did for us on that cross in putting our sins to death with him so that, by God-gifted faith in him, we can now die to sin and live to God and to his righteousness in walks of obedience to our Lord and to his commands. And we should be sharing with others the purpose of Jesus’ life and death and resurrection, that we might be set free from slavery to sin to follow Jesus with our lives.

Mary, Did You Know?

Songwriters: Greene Lee Rufus / Lowry Mark Alan

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you delivered, will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy
Is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
That sleeping child you’re
Holding is the great, I Am

Mary, did you know?
