Jesus Christ is Our Salvation

Mary, the mother of Jesus, had just given birth to her son. An angel of God visited some shepherds keeping watch over their flock by night, and he told them that on that day, in the city of David, “there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” So they went and they found Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus. And they told what they had heard the angel say to them about the child. And then they went back to their flock of sheep.

Eight days passed, and now it was time for Jesus to be circumcised and given the name “Jesus,” the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. And there was a man named Simeon, who was righteous and devout. And the Holy Spirit was upon him. And he came into the temple, and he took Jesus into his arms, and blessed God, and said,

“Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace,
According to Your word;
For my eyes have seen Your salvation,
Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
A Light of revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32 NASB1995)

So he announced, in the presence of other people, that the baby in his arms was the salvation of God for all people, Gentiles and Jews alike. So, first the angel of God announced to the shepherds that the baby who had been born was a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And then Simeon announced before all who were present in the temple that Jesus was the people’s salvation, which was for both Gentile and Jew alike, no difference.

And then Simeon spoke to Mary, and he said to her, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed— and a sword will pierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” He was already prophesying as to what Jesus’ life would be like and what his death would be like, too, and what would be in the minds and hearts of his persecutors, as well.

So, I am finding in my reading of the story of Jesus’ birth that it was mentioned that he was the Savior of all humankind, that he was (and still is) the Christ, the promised Messiah of the people, that he is our Lord (God), and that he is our salvation. So, if we are going to tell the story of his birth, that needs to be included, and not just as a casual remark, but we need to be telling the people of the world what that means that Jesus is God, that he is the anointed of God, and that he is our Savior and our salvation.

If it was critically important to mention it when he was born, then it is critically important that we mention it when we talk about his miraculous birth today. We need to be spreading the good news of how Jesus Christ was born, yes, but also that he lived, that he lived with purpose, and that he died with the same purpose which is for the salvation of human lives from our bondage (addiction) to sin so that we can now serve our Lord in walks of obedience to his commands, pleasing to him, by his grace, and in his power.

We need to be spreading the message of the gospel, but not just two or three times a year, but every day of the year. And we need to tell the people that Jesus gave his life up for us on that cross to deliver us out of slavery to sin so we will now serve him with our lives in surrender to his perfect will for our lives. And this is not just a recommendation, but it is a matter of life and death. For if we continue living in sin, making sin our practice, and obedience to God is not our practice, we do not have eternal life with God.

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.

Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.

Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.

Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.

If Jesus Christ truly is “the reason for the season” it should be evident in our social media and internet posts, and in how we live our lives, that we see Jesus as our salvation, the one who delivers from sin and transforms human lives.
