“Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope for His lovingkindness,
To deliver their soul from death
And to keep them alive in famine.
Our soul waits for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.
For our heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
Let Your lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us,
According as we have hoped in You.” (Psalm 33:18-22 NASB1995)
Who are those who fear the Lord? They are all who, by God-persuaded and God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, have denied self, died with Christ to sin, and been raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but now as servants of the Lord in obedience to his commands (New Covenant). They are all who are living righteously, by the grace of God, who are faithful in service to the Lord Jesus. And they are all who believe that God will do both what he promised and what he also threatened.
[Ephesians 2:8-10; Romans 6:1-23; Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23]
And those who hope for the lovingkindness of the Lord are not those with just wishful thinking, but this hope is a confident assurance of God’s lovingkindness to all who call on him in truth, who deny self, die to sin, and obey our Lord in daily practice. We can be assured that God is with us, that he is directing our path, and that nothing will happen to us but what God allows it, and he allows it for his purposes, and that he will carry us through it all to the finish line, by his grace, in his power, via our surrender to Him.
[Psalm 145:17-20; Psalm 13:4-6; Psalm 23:1-6; Psalm 31:7-8,15-16]
And what is the goal in our salvation from sin? It is not just so that we will have our sins forgiven so that when we die we will go to heaven, and not to hell. The goal of our salvation is to deliver us out of our slavery (addiction) to sin so that we will now follow our Lord in walks of obedience to his commands in holy living, by his grace and in his power. For if sin remains our practice, and not surrender to God in obedience to our Lord’s commands, then we will not escape hell, and we will not have eternal life with God.
[Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 9:23-26; Romans 6:1-23; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 5:3-6; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10; Acts 26:18]
What should it look like for our souls to wait for the Lord? Well, it definitely has to do with patience, endurance, faith, and belief in God’s sovereignty over our lives, that he is the one in control, and that he has all things under his command. And if we truly believe that God is our help and our shield, then we should have no fear of danger, and we should not fret what may be coming, but we should be those who put our hope fully in God to work out his plan. We should put our trust fully in him without fear of the future.
[Psalm 33:20-22; Jeremiah 1:4-19; Matthew 10:24-28; Philippians 1:12-14; 2 Timothy 1:6-7; 1 Peter 3:13-17; Revelation 2:9-10; 2 Corinthians 5:6-10]
