“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” (Ephesians 6:18-20 NASB1995)
What is prayer? It is open two-way communication between us and God, where we can speak to him, and he can speak to us, and we can hear him in our spirits and he can hear us and respond to us. And this can take place at any time of the day, in any location, with eyes open or shut, and while sitting, standing, walking, lying down, or kneeling. For the physical position of our bodies is not so much important as is the spiritual position of our hearts. We need to have hearts receptive to hear from our Lord always.
And to pray in the Spirit is to pray according to the will of God, not for selfish purposes, not to complain and gripe, not just asking for what we want, but seeking the will and purpose God has for our lives and for the lives of the people we know and love. So we pray for the salvation of loved ones. We pray for healing of the sick and afflicted. We pray for needs to be met. And we pray for the saints, i.e. those of faith in Jesus Christ who are different from the world because we are being conformed to the likeness of Christ.
We need to pray for our fellow Christians, for those who have denied self, died with Christ to sin, and who are walking in obedience to our Lord and to his commands in daily living. For all of us are going to face trials and tribulations. All of us are going to be attacked by the enemy of our souls. We are all going to be opposed if what we are teaching others is the truth of the gospel and not the lies which tickle itching ears and which appease human flesh. So pray for one another for strength and perseverance and courage.
And we need to pray for all Christians who have wandered from the faith that they will be brought back to a right relationship with the Lord in holy living and in faithful surrender to the Lord in doing his will and in obeying his commands. And we need to pray for all who profess faith in Jesus Christ but who have never denied self, died to sin, and obeyed God and his commands, that they will have their hearts open to the truth, and that they will now, by faith in Christ, surrender their lives to the Lord to obey him in doing his will.
For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

Pray that eyes may enlightened be,
So they may know Christ.
Pray that they may Him better know,
Strengthened by His pow’r.
Pray that they may grasp
How wide and long
And high and deep
Is Christ’s love.
Pray that they may be filled
To the fullness of God’s love.
Pray with thanksgiving.
Pray for an open door for me,
So I may share Christ.
Pray when the gospel is proclaimed –
Shared with clarity.
Pray words are given me so
I declare the gospel fearlessly.
I pray for you to be active
Sharing your faith, too.
Pray continually.
We oft not know for what to pray,
So we ask for help.
The Spirit intercedes for us –
Words cannot express.
Just keep on praying for the saints
With all kinds of requests to God.
Pray they may have faith to
Please their God in ev’ry way.
Pray with joyfulness.
