“The Shack” Review

I admit that I have not personally read the book “The Shack,” nor have I seen the movie by the same name, and I don’t intend to, so this review is not mine. But, ever since the book came out in 2007, I believe it was, I have heard many people talking about the book, and now the movie, too, and so I am not totally ignorant of what the book (the story) is about. But, since it has gained so much popularity among those who call themselves Christians, I thought it would be good to share this review that I read today for your discernment.

Note – At GotQuestions.org, we typically do not write reviews of books. Our goal is to provide quality, biblically-based answers so that people will be able to evaluate teachers / ministries / books for themselves. However, in recent months, we have been receiving a significant volume of questions about The Shack by William P. Young. As with any book, if you read The Shack, compare what it teaches with Scripture, and reject anything that does not agree with God’s Word…

  1. In the days we live, I think it’s too wise to really approach anything that’s labeled “Christian” or “family”.

Too many just don’t see it. Duck Dynasty, The Bible series that was on The History Channel etc…. subtle little things that make big changes.

  2. Yes, it was all the rage here too but I heard so much about from others I made my conclusions without reading it myself. I was encouraged to read the book so I could be less critical. After the first 2 chapters I was convinced I didn’t want to read anymore and I didn’t, well not for some time. When I finally did read it from cover to cover I couldn’t write a review on it. It left me, well, I wished I hadn’t read it.

    I can’t recall most of it now and I’m glad I can’t.

    • Thank you for that input. I sympathize. In my lifetime I have read or I have watched many things I shouldn’t have and wish I wouldn’t have and some of those were on the recommendation of others, too. I am way more cautious now.

      • We have to listen to the Spirit within us, not to people. I know a lot of people think I am overly cautious, too, but that is just their opinion. Far too many times in my life I went with what people told me, and I paid for it dearly. I have to listen to my Lord, and heed what he says.

So, be encouraged! Keep on listening to the Lord regarding such matters as these. He knows us better than anyone. And, he knows what is best for us and what will do us harm.

  3. From what I have read about the shack and after seeing the trailer I can say without a doubt that The Shack is trash, ungodly trash. It’s sad how many proffesing Christians think it’s good. My prayer is that believers become more discerning.

    • Leah, Oh, Amen! I so agree with you on this!! Yes, it is very sad how many people who claim faith in Jesus Christ are buying into this and other stuff like it. And, this is because it tickles “itching ears” and it tells them what they want to hear, but not what they need to hear. Thank you so much for sharing those thoughts here. I appreciate them. We just need to keep praying. So much deception out there.
