Amy kind of “tagged” me for this “Before and After Tag.” She said, “Are you going to do this tag? It would be cool to read your answers.” I said, “Was I tagged in it? If I was, I missed it somehow.” Then, I realized it was open to anyone. It helps to read all the words. 🙂
There are 10 questions to answer with this tag, so here are my answers. Praying God leads me in what to say, and that it will be for his glory:
1) Who was your family growing up?
My father, Evan, my mother, Dorothy, my older brothers Noel and Dale, and my younger sisters Dorothy (aka Dorty) and Carol. Yes, I was a middle child.
2) Who is your family now?
My husband, Rick, our children David (& Erin), Jenny (& Randy), John (& Faith) and Steven (& Krystal), and 14 grandchildren ages 1 to 21.
3) Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Akron, Ohio, USA, mainly on the east side of the city. I lived in 11 different residences all in the greater Akron area from birth to age 22. That prepared me for a lifetime of moving from place to place.
4) Where do you live now?
Presently we live in Rock Hill, SC, just over the border from Charlotte, NC, right off of I77. But, since I have been married, we have lived in 19 different residences in 5 states (OH, IN, TN, NC and SC) and in 10 different cities. So, I have lived in 30 different residences in my 70 years of life. And, neither my father nor my husband were in the military. But, my husband was in IT.
5) What did you want to be when you became older?
I don’t know that I had any aspirations to be something when I became older other than I wanted to be a “real” Christian, not a hypocritical one. I wanted to love people and to be loved, not to live in an environment of hate and abuse and neglect. I wanted a happy life, not a sad one.
6) What do you do now?
I am the Lord’s servant and witness. Nearly 16 years ago he called me to write what he teaches me from his Word each day and to place it on the internet, so that is what I do, as he leads me, and as he directs me in what to say. And, then 9 years ago he gave me the gift of song writing, and then two years ago he had me begin writing poems (without music). All of this comes from him. So, this is my full-time assignment from the Lord.
7) What is your earliest memory?
My earliest memory is from when I was two years old. A lady lived next door to us who had long fingernails and she wore bright red nail polish and she typed on a typewriter (the old fashioned kind in 1952) and I wondered how she did that with those fingernails. I know that is pretty vivid for a two-year-old, but I have very vivid memories from my childhood. And, one day not long ago my brother put physical addresses to my memories, which validated them.
8) What is one of your recent memories?
I’m with Amy here. I don’t know if this is supposed to be a past memory just recently brought back to recall or whatever. So, I am not certain how to answer this question. But, I, too, am making new memories, not like the old ones. Well, not like the old ones that were bad ones. I am making new and good memories with my grandchildren, and with my children, and with people I have met on here, too, and with other friends and family members.
9) What do you consider your greatest achievement so far?
My greatest achievement isn’t mine. It is the Lord’s. It is what he has done and is doing in my life to make me who he wants me to be, and to use me in the way that he is using me in other people’s lives. It is the change that he has produced in my life, bringing beauty out of ashes. That is a God-thing!
For, I grew up in a home environment of abuse and neglect, yet very religiously legalistic and hypocritical. That is why I wanted to be a “real” Christian, not a hypocritical one. And, then I married a sex addict, not knowing that I had, and we have been married nearly 48 years, and so that has been a hard life, too.
And, then, for a short period of time, I strayed from my pure devotion to the Lord, and I went the direction my husband was going, but the Lord brought me back, and now he is using me in this way. All glory to God!
10) What is your biggest hope in life?
My biggest hope in life is my Lord, my salvation from sin, my life in Jesus Christ, my eternal life with God, and that all that the Lord has been having me write these past 15 years is making a difference in other people’s lives. And, that because of God’s leading in my life, and my obedience, and God’s working in me and through me, that many people are going to be with Jesus one day, and that they had closer walks with the Lord because they heard the truth spoken amidst a plethora of lies which are being spread.
The Lord Jesus put this song in my mind as I was considering answering these questions. Truly this is a picture of my life, living in the storms of life, calling out to God, and then having that time when I sank. But, then God rescued me, and he gave me a new song, and a new purpose in life, and that is to be doing what he now has me doing for his praise and glory, and for the spiritual growth of his people, and for the salvation of human lives.
Master, The Tempest is Raging!
Lyrics by Mary A. Baker, 1874
Music by Horatio R. Palmer, 1874
Master, the tempest is raging!
The billows are tossing high!
The sky is o’ershadowed with blackness,
No shelter or help is nigh;
Carest Thou not that we perish?
How canst Thou lie asleep,
When each moment so madly is threat’ning
A grave in the angry deep?
Master, with anguish of spirit
I bow in my grief today;
The depths of my sad heart are troubled—
Oh, waken and save, I pray!
Torrents of sin and of anguish
Sweep o’er my sinking soul;
And I perish! I perish! dear Master—
Oh, hasten, and take control.
Master, the terror is over,
The elements sweetly rest;
Earth’s sun in the calm lake is mirrored,
And heaven’s within my breast;
Linger, O blessed Redeemer!
Leave me alone no more;
And with joy I shall make the blest harbor,
And rest on the blissful shore.
The winds and the waves shall obey Thy will,
Peace, be still!
Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea,
Or demons or men, or whatever it be,
No waters can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean, and earth, and skies;
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, be still! Peace, be still!
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, peace, be still!

The Before and After Tag A.K.A. the Then and Now Tag was created by
Robert of WATCHING DAILY AT WISDOM’S GATES
1. Use the image at the top of the post
2. Answer the 10 questions
3. And tag the people you’d like to answer the questions, or…
Do as Amy did, and say, “This tag is open to anyone who would love a chance to reflect and see just how good God has been to you.” I ditto Amy!
