Psalm 109:1-5 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

“1 O God of my praise,
be not silent.
2For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me;
they speak against me with lying tongues.
3They surround me with hateful words
and attack me without cause.
4In return for my love they accuse me,
but I am a man of prayer.
5They repay me evil for good,
and hatred for my love.”

Falsely Accused

This sounds like how Jesus was treated by His own people, of His own race, of His own faith, of His own family and friends and neighbors. It was how He was treated, too, by the religious authorities in the temple of God, by many who professed faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob while they dishonored God with their adulteries and idolatries and evil schemes and desires. They mocked Him, criticized Him, falsely accused Him of what He did not do, set traps for Him to fall into (mental traps) and they cursed Him.

Enemies of The Righteous

So, who are the enemies of the righteous? They can be others who profess faith in Jesus Christ, who call themselves Christians, but who do not live like followers of Jesus Christ. And they can be family members (Jesus talked about this) and friends and neighbors. And they can be pastors of “churches” who are living in sin who have adopted the “cheap grace gospel” which does not require of them that they deny self, die to sin, and follow our Lord in surrender to His will, in walks of obedience to His commands in holy living.

Although they may (or may not) make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ, they are the malicious, the immoral, deceivers, manipulators, egocentrics, liars, untrustworthy, idolaters, adulterers, the self-indulgent and the selfish. And so they do not want to hear that they must deny self, die to sin, and follow Jesus in obedience to His commands, as a matter of life practice. They prefer a softer version of “the gospel” which allows them to keep on in their sins in disobedience to God while still claiming for themselves eternal life.

They are enemies of God who are deceitful workmen because they deliberately and habitually choose their sins over obedience to God and to His commands. They want the freedom to live however they want to live and to not have to be told that they must deny self, die to sin, and obey God and His commands in practice. So, they are at war with God and with His gospel and with His servants who are teaching the truth of the gospel. And so they may be also those who are lying about the righteous to destroy them.

They Pervert the Gospel

So, they are those who pervert the message of the gospel in order to appease human flesh in order to give permission to themselves and to others to continue on a path of moral decline and habitual failure to obey God and His commands. For they are those who are intoxicated to sin, who are the self-indulgent. And so some of them are literally speaking against the righteous, lying about them, and distorting their words out of anger, bitterness, and resentment, to cause others to not listen to their words.

Again, that is how Jesus was treated, and the prophets before Him, and His apostles, too. In return for Jesus’ love for them they accused Him falsely of what He did not do, and eventually had Him crucified on a cross. They repaid His goodness with evil and His love with hatred and with false accusations against His character and His motivations for why He did and said the things that He did and said. So, if you are speaking the truth of the gospel, don’t be surprised if you end up being treated much the same as was Jesus Christ.

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling

Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.

Cleanse your heart, made new within.

Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.

Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.

Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
