Walk in His Ways

Jeremiah 7:21-29 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

“21This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat yourselves! 22For when I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt, I did not merely command them about burnt offerings and sacrifices, 23but this is what I commanded them: Obey Me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people. You must walk in all the ways I have commanded you, so that it may go well with you.

“24Yet they did not listen or incline their ear, but they followed the stubborn inclinations of their own evil hearts. They went backward and not forward. 25From the day your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have sent you all My servants the prophets again and again. 26Yet they would not listen to Me or incline their ear, but they stiffened their necks and did more evil than their fathers.

“27When you tell them all these things, they will not listen to you. When you call to them, they will not answer. 28Therefore you must say to them, ‘This is the nation that would not listen to the voice of the LORD their God and would not receive correction. Truth has perished; it has disappeared from their lips. 29Cut off your hair and throw it away. Raise up a lamentation on the barren heights, for the LORD has rejected and forsaken the generation of His wrath.’”

Obey God

Under the Old Covenant and under the New Covenant alike, we who believe in God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit – must obey God and His commands. Now we are not under the Old Covenant liturgical, ceremonial, sacrificial, purification, circumcision, dietary and Sabbath laws. But we do have to obey God’s moral laws and all His commands to us written down for us in the New Testament. But we need to read them in their appropriate biblical context to make sure we are getting the correct interpretation.

For us to be the children of God, in fellowship with our Lord, forgiven of our sins, and on our way to heaven, we must obey our Lord. We must walk (in conduct, in practice) in the ways of the Lord which are listed for us in the New Testament writings. Sin must no longer be our practice. Obedience to God must be our practice. For if we claim to know God and to be in fellowship with Him, but sin is still what we practice, and not obedience to God, we do not know God, and we do not have eternal life with God.

Listened Not

So many people today who profess faith in Jesus Christ, though, are not listening to God and to the teachings of the Scriptures under the New Covenant, but they are listening to liars and deceivers who are leading the masses astray to follow after a man-created gospel. They are listening to other humans who are telling them that they don’t have to obey God and that they don’t have to repent of (forsake) their sins. For they call that “works salvation.” But they are lying to the people to lead them astray.

“They went backward and not forward.” Absolutely that is what is happening. So many are just giving lip service to God, convinced that all their sins are forgiven and now heaven is guaranteed them as their eternal rest, but while they continue in deliberate and habitual sin against the Lord without conscience and without remorse and without genuine biblical repentance. And even though God has sent them many messengers to speak the truth of the Scriptures to them, they are ignoring them and are continuing in sin.

Tell Them

Now when God calls us to take His messages to the people of the world, and to the worldly church, and to all who profess His name, there is no guarantee that any of them will listen to us. But we must speak the words of God to the people whether or not they listen. For some will listen. And later on, when things get much worse than they are now, more will listen, I believe, although many still will not. But we are to obey God in taking His messages to the people regardless of what kinds of responses we receive.

And none of us should be looking for human approval. We should be willing to be corrected if we have something wrong, but we should make certain that we are wrong, and we should not just believe everything others tell us. So we should seek the Lord for His guidance and direction in all that we are and do and say for His glory and for His purposes. And we should give all the glory to God for any good that comes from our obedience to our Lord. For we work for Him to do His will and to say what He says we must say.

Truth Perished

Well, truth has not altogether perished, but it is certainly being knocked down and stomped on and thrown away a lot! So many people professing faith in Jesus Christ are buying into the lies and they are rejecting the truth of the Scriptures, as taught in their correct biblical context. They are relying on other humans to tell them the truth rather than them searching the Scriptures themselves and studying them in their correct biblical context. And it appears that the shorter the messages, the more readers they get.

The “feel-good” stuff is what is most popular, and anything that speaks of sin and obedience and submission to God is generally not on the “most popular” reading lists. But our job, as our Lord’s messengers, is to share with the people what the Lord puts on our hearts to share, which must include the teachings on obedience and repentance. For our job is not to gain human approval for ourselves, but to lead people to repentance and to obedience to our Lord, resulting in their deliverance from sin and eternal life with God.

When I Was Walking

An Original Work / January 16, 2020
Christ’s Free Servant, Sue J Love

When I was walking along the way,
My Lord was with me, and He did say,
“My child I’m with you. I hear you pray,
‘Oh, help me, Lord! Need You today!’”

He is my friend, near to the end.
Gently leads me. His servant be.
He helps me pray – knows what to say.
He’s all I need. On Him I feed.

When I am wond’ring of what to do,
He gently leads me to what is truth.
He is my helper. He strengthens me.
When I’m in want, supplies my need.

He comforts me with all His love.
Gives me His grace from heav’n above.
I heed His call to watch and pray,
To guard my heart throughout each day.

When He is calling to come to Him,
To let Him lead you, trust Him within,
How will you answer to Him today?
Will you say, “Yes, Lord, have your way”?

Do not neglect to let Him in,
Cleanse you from sin, made new within.
Leave all your sin, obey your Lord,
Trust in His Word – His mighty Sword.
