The Footsteps of Jesus
At the end of 1 Peter 2 we read and we learned that we who are called of God to be followers of Christ Jesus are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ in how He lived. And the first thing mentioned is that He committed no sin. Then we recognized that all of us humans are born into this world with sin natures in the image of Adam, so all of us have sinned except for Jesus. For He was conceived of the Holy Spirit to a virgin woman. Since He was not born of man, He was not born with a sin nature, and He did not sin.
A summary of what this taught us is that sin is not to be what we practice, by habit. We are now to live free from the control of sin. And we are not to be those who speak lies. And we are not to retaliate against or threaten those who sin against us. But by faith in Jesus Christ we are to die to sin and to live to righteousness in obedience to our Lord. And Jesus is our example in how we are to live and in how we should respond to life situations and to things others do to us or say about us, etc. And Jesus never obeyed sin.
Submission of Wives to Husbands
1 Peter 3:1-2 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
“1Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your husbands, so that even if they refuse to believe the word, they will be won over without words by the behavior of their wives 2when they see your pure and reverent demeanor.”
In what way are married women to submit themselves to their husbands? In the same way in which Jesus submitted to God the Father and to those in positions of authority over Him. He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth. And He had a pure and reverent demeanor. So He did not submit to sin nor did He do anything against the will of God the Father. So He often had to say “No!” to those in positions of authority over Him because they were trying to trick Him into sinning and into disobeying God.
So, in the same way in which Jesus submitted to those in authority over Him us wives are to submit ourselves to our husbands. We are to remain pure in heart, mind, and body. We are not to sin against God in any way. So we do not submit to the things God disapproves of and that He speaks against and that He instructs us must not be a part of our lives now that our trust is in Him to be Lord and Master of our lives. So we do not have relations with husbands who are living as prostitutes, for the marriage bed must be pure.
Now there are women who are married to men who are narcissistic in character and in behaviors and in how they treat their wives. They are habitual liars, deceivers, manipulators, and con artists. They are self-serving egomaniacs and chameleons who are lacking in compassion, sympathy, and caring, who are abusers and users who use gaslighting as a means to strike fear in their wives to gain control over them. And they will persuade their wives that they must obey them even in joining in with them in sinful acts.
But we are to follow the example of Jesus, and He did not obey the authorities over Him if what they required of Him was against the will and purpose of God and if it was sinful. And as wives with husbands, we are to win our husbands over to faith in Jesus Christ by our pure and reverent demeanor, not by us willingly submitting to our husbands in doing what is sinful just because our husbands might be those who use gaslighting and manipulating to try to convince their wives that they have to obey sin.
Yes, submit to your husbands in the same way in which you submit to Christ which is to do what is godly and pleasing to God, and that which is morally pure and upright, and to refuse to give in to the temptation to sin against God. For if your husbands are able to manipulate you into giving into sin with the threat that you are sinning against God if you do not submit to them, then remember that we are to submit to our husbands like we submit to Christ, which is to NOT submit to sin but to what is righteous and pure.
