1 John 2:24-29 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
“24As for you, let what you have heard from the beginning remain in you. If it does, you will also remain in the Son and in the Father. 25And this is the promise that He Himself made to us: eternal life.
“26I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But just as His true and genuine anointing teaches you about all things, so remain in Him as you have been taught.
“28And now, little children, remain in Christ, so that when He appears, we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming. 29If you know that He is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him.”
In The Beginning
When we first put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives, we should be taught that the faith to believe in Jesus comes from God, it is authored and perfected by Jesus Christ, and it is gifted to us by God. It is not of our own doing, not of our flesh. And it is persuaded of God as to His righteousness and holiness, and of our sinfulness, and of our need to deny self, die to sin (repent) and obey God and His commands. For Jesus died to put our sins to death so we will die to sin and live for righteousness.
[Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 1:12-13; John 6:44; Acts 26:18; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Hebrews 12:1-2; Titus 2:11-14; 1 Peter 2:24]
Let it Remain!
Faith in Jesus Christ is not a one time thing which happens in our lives which secures heaven for us when we die, done deal. Faith, which comes from God, is progressive. We are saved (past), we are being saved (present active), and we will be saved (future) when Jesus returns to take His faithful bride to be with Him for eternity. But we must continue in those walks of faith in obedience to our Lord, no longer as slaves to sin, but serving the Lord Jesus with our lives until He returns or until we die and leave this life.
[Matthew 7:21-23; Matthew 24:9-14; Luke 9:23-26; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:24; Romans 13:11; 1 Corinthians 1:18; 1 Corinthians 15:1-2; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; 2 Timothy 1:8-9; Hebrews 9:28; Hebrews 10:19-39; 1 Peter 1:5-9; 1 John 3:4-10]
They Who Deceive
But we need to be aware that not everyone is who they say they are, doing what they say they are doing, teaching the truth of God’s Word to the people. We have many “wolves in sheep’s clothing” among us who serve as pastors, elders, missionaries, evangelists, Bible teachers, and the Lord’s messengers. They portend that what they are teaching is the truth, and they will confirm it with Scriptures, but usually Scriptures pulled out of their correct biblical context then twisted to say what they do not say in truth.
So we need to be aware that not everyone who teaches the Scriptures is teaching the truth. Lies and liars abound! So we need to be listening for the Spirit’s voice, and we need to be reading the Scriptures in their full and correct biblical context so that we get the true meaning of what they teach. And we should compare Scripture with Scripture, for they should agree with one another if they are teaching on the same subject. So don’t put your faith in other humans. Put your faith in the Lord to reveal to you the truth.
Remain in Christ
What does it mean to be “in Christ”? It is not about the words we speak or the faith we profess, but it is about the surrender of our lives to the will of God, allowing God to now be Lord of our lives and us His servants who are doing His will, in His power. Our lives are no longer our own to be lived however we want to live them. Our lives are now under Holy Spirit control and we are now to obey the will of God, and no longer yield our lives over to the control of sin. And we must be those who practice righteousness.
And to remain in Christ has to do with us continuing in our walks of surrender to His will, in obedience to His commands, and no longer as slaves to sin. But this isn’t just about sinning or not sinning. This is about lives surrendered to God with Him now being Lord and Master of our lives, with Him now being the one to direct our steps and to show us what to do and where to go and what to say and to whom, etc. For we now belong to Christ and our lives are no longer our own to be lived however we want (desire).

Blessed Be Your Name
by Matt Redman
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s ‘all as it should be’
On the road marked with suffering
Though there’s pain in the offering
Blessed be the name of the Lord
You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name
