Count Your Blessings

This hymn is really speaking to my heart today. Sometimes we can get overburdened by the cares of this world and forget all that God has blessed us with. When we praise the Lord, and we count our blessings, and we don’t focus all our attention on the burdens we bear, but we focus our minds and our hearts on all that God has done in our lives, and through our lives, and all the good he has brought into our lives, then we experience much peace and joy, even in the midst of great conflict and persecution.

Count Your Blessings

Hymn by Johnson Oatman, Jr.
pub.1897, copyright status is Public Domain

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

  1. It must be so convenient and comforting to think there’s someone blessing you and your life while they’re simultaneously allowing millions and millions of people to starve and die despite prayers.

    I envy the simplicity of mind that allows such philosophy.

    • Amanda, God is not the author of evil, but he allows evil to exist. And, because evil exists, many people suffer and die. It is the curse of sin on this world we live in. But, if God were to remove all sin, he would have to remove all of us, and many people would die and burn in hell the rest of their existence.

      So, he is patient and longsuffering with humans so that many of them would believe in God the Son, Jesus Christ, and have the hope of salvation from their sins and eternal life with God, so that when they die physically, they will live with Christ for eternity. Yet, one day he will judge the evil in this world, and when the end comes, there will be no more chance to believe in the Lord and to have eternal life with God.

      My heart goes out to all people in this world who are suffering. And, many people suffer in many different ways. The point of this song is not that some of us have blessings and no suffering, but that in our sufferings, difficulties, heartaches, etc. that we should focus not on what we don’t have, but on what we do have, though it may be little. And, when we do that, we can have joy and peace despite our circumstances.
